In The Shadow Of Croft Towers by Abigail Wilson

A curious life of questions brings a young woman to the Croft Towers to find answers, to seek truth, and to find a peace about all that was unknown to her. This is where we find a web of lies, deceit, and a cast of characters who seem very haunty and secretrive. Can you imagine finding yourself on a carriage to a place so foreign from anything you have known before? This is where we find our main character, Sibil Delafield.

She's a very likeable character. I found myself truly enjoying this novel. This mix of intrigue and mystery. The pages are filled with suspense as we learn more of these characters and as the story unfolds.

I found that it was easy reading. The words easily flowed. The writing is seamless as she travels from chapter to chapter. All in all I enjoyed this novel. There is much here to be desired.

When reading I love to put down a book and ponder the take a way. Just what is it that a book leaves with me? This was simply an enjoyable read for me. I loved how fearless Sibil is, her curious mind, her heart that is searching. But for me, this intriguing read from Thomas Nelson, a Christian publisher, was missing something. Faith. Oh, if faith was included it would have made this novel so much more for me. I would have had more of a take a way. Something tangible for me to hold on to. There was no mention of God, nothing of faith, not even a prayer spoken.

If this were a novel I had ordered from a publisher other than Christian I would have read it and enjoyed it. But, for me, this is such a valuable reason people choose Christian fiction. That want that aspect, that foundation, that take a way for choosing a faith-based novel. When choosing a selection from a Christian publisher that is what the reader is expecting. Now, there was nothing inappropriate in this novel. Nothing that was offensive. It was a good read. But if faith was included it could have been outstanding.

With This Pledge by Tamera Alexander

The depth of beauty this novel holds is absolutely legacy writing. I have long been a fan of Tamera Alexander. Two of my favorite series penned by this author are the Fountain Creek Chronicles and Timber Ridge Reflections. These are the kind of black and white words that not only tell a story, but they touch the soul and come alive.

This new novel, With This Pledge, is one of those books that should be in the hand of every person that is unsure of their like in history. Place a book like this in the classroom of young adults and they will fall in love with history and with learning.

This is one of those rich and poignant novels that should be on the big screen. The amazing gift of Ms. Alexander is that she makes you feel as though you are on the front lines, in Carnton, and gives the reader a soul connection to every character. The emotion expressed through her writing is untouchable. She's the best of the best.

The writing is superb. The characters as real as it gets. The historical truth within these pages is remarkable. Oh, the research she must have lived and breathed is clearly shown in this incredible story. Love, principles, promises, honor, faith, it's all here. Friendship and brotherhood, family, lines drawn, protection of home and family, slavery and freedom, choices and coming to realize truth beyond all scope of what generations have taught us, these themes are all alive within these pages.

I can tell you that last night at midnight I closed this book and just a few short hours later I was dreaming of Carnton. When a reader dreams of the places, sights, and sounds that have come to life for them through a novel, well now, you know that's exceptional writing.

This one impacts the heart. It did for me. Generations back my family was plantation owners and owners of slaves. For me to be connected to more truths and read stories of soldier and slave it leaves a tremendous insight and a longing to know more.

I cannot wait to see what comes next for Ms. Alexander. I will patiently await book two. If you have yet to read a novel penned by this wonderful writer I encourage you to begin here with this treasure.

There is so much I can share about this novel, but it is my hope that you uncover its beauty page by page as I too did. The characters are unforgettable, the setting at Carnton is beautiful because war is all around, death and agony are present, but Carnton has a foundation of faith and that alone allows God to shine through all that isn't understood. There is a service in those at Carnton that should come alive in all of us. This is our time to shine in the midst of the unknown. The beautiful characters in this novel are rich in wisdom and carry such love for one another. They serve beyond themselves in knowing it is their calling. They are obedient to their Lord and in that nothing but love and compassion can flow.

I close this novel with such a rich gratitude for this story that has touched my heart and reminds me there is more to living than doing so for self. In our service, no matter where or what, when we allow God to move through us, change comes and love flows.

Grab your favorite coffee. Snuggle in for a while. You are in for a journey to another time and place, but has such reflection on our lives today.

Happy Reading! πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™

Who I Am With You by Robin Lee Hatcher

Robin Lee Hatcher is a brilliant storyteller. I have loved her works for many years. I was so excited to see she has a new release and I was blessed to be a part of reviewing it. Let's just say that you cannot go wrong in choosing a Robin Lee Hatcher novel.

Warm and inviting. With the title there are a few takeaways for me. Who I Am With You, can mean who these two characters are together and also who they are with God. We see Him so present in their lives. On good days and bad, the pretty and the messy, He has never left them and as these two characters come together, He moves in a great way bringing blessings to their broken hearts.

There are two main characters, both looking for solace. They are wanting so much to escape the recent past, their hearts and burdened and are carrying many emotions. Both characters moved to Hope Springs to find a peace they have yet to know. Let me just say that Hope Springs, well, there's a love that springs up, a joy, a peace, and a tenderness of grace. Yes, Hope Springs so many things for these two lovable and relatable characters.

They each of have heart circumstances to work out. Trying to make sense of just how they got to where they are today when just not long ago life seemed so very different and full of promise. Now they are finding themselves questioning everything.

They learn a great deal together. Neither searching for love. That is pretty much the farthest thing from their minds. But when they meet, even that very first meeting, something tender happens. They find a comfort, between strangers, they find a place where they can simply be themselves.

There is forgiveness to learn, to let go of those things that cannot be changed. Sometimes in life we just cannot figure out and make sense of things that just don't make sense at all. This is where their faith grows. This is where we see God move in their lives, in all those unseen areas, they learn to trust God.

I must say that once I started reading there weren't really any surprises, but that doesn't matter when you have such a tenderly written novel that holds within in so much that the reader can relate to. For me, it wasn't the surprises that the book didn't hold, but in what God did in my heart as I turned each page.

Friends, this one is for sure a gem of a read. I hope it is one you choose to add to your library. If so, I would love to hear your thoughts after you read the last page.

Happy Reading!

When Do I Love You? By Thomas Nelson and Illustrated by Marta Cabrol

This gem of a treasure just may be one of my favorite books I've reviewed this year. Perfect for all ages of boys and girls. I'm excited to read this one to my grandchildren who are between the ages of 2-8 and I know each of them will love it.

The cover is just darling. The illustrations are warm and inviting. A book of love. It brought me to mind of 1 Corinthians 13 and all that love is. Each page is designated for one of God's creatures. A little duck, a little bear, a little lizard, a little kitty, a little mouse, a little moose, a little dog, a little raccoon, a little goat, and ending with a little one.

I can see this book being given as a baby's first birthday gift. A book to grow with and one to treasure. It too would be perfect for a children's library. There is a rich sweetness to this book. One that shares a 'no matter what' kind of love.

"When do I love you, little duck? When we're riding in the truck! No matter how bumpy the road might be, we'll bounce there together, just you and me."

"When do I love you, little lizard? When we're hemmed in by the blizzard! If ever the snow piles up to your eyes, don't worry-I'll hold you, I won't leave your side."

"When do I love you, little moose? When we're sitting in a caboose! If you take a train to lands faraway, I'll travel with you each step of the way."

"When do I love you, little dog? When we're trotting through the fog! If the air gets thick and we cannot see, I'll call your name. You can count on me."

Rhyming love to little ones, lots of lessons to learn, and such time spent together just reassuring them how big your love is. This is one you are sure to love!

Happy Reading!

Justice Delayed by Cara Putman

After reading Beyond Justice and Imperfect Justice I was excited to see the third book in this series to be offered for review. (Take a peek at my reviews).

Although each of them can be read as a stand alone read, I would encourage you to read them in order as this group of women, these friends, how they are connected, give you a better understanding of the characters.

Now I loved the first two books. They leaped off the pages for me. I enjoyed this novel, but in a different way. It wasn't such a thriller for me. More of a drama. But very relevant in our world today.

I admire the strong women who live within these pages. Their strength and faith are inspirational. They are encouraging characters. We see their strengths and their weaknesses. Cara Putman is outstanding at providing the reader with characters that we can relate to. Characters that stand out and are ready for the battle ahead.

Jamie Nichols is one of those characters for me. Such devastating horrors took place in her childhood. She's never forgotten the man who took her innocence, who abused her, and walked away living a life of power and position. She's waited so long for the day to see justice. That day is now here. The day when she has found a new strength to face this attacker.

I admire for for facing something that many would question the why now. But for her it's more than just justice in a courtroom. It is the man facing up to his actions. It is herself gaining strength and finding a place of healing.

I love that she has surrounded herself with like minded women, ready to stand side by side for whatever may come, but together they will face with faith and hope.

But there too are other characters to admire. One of them is Chandler Bolton. A military vet facing his own battles at hand, but reaching out and helping others to heal. This is a servant in the kingdom of God, making a huge difference. Through helping others he too finds a place of healing from the impact that war has had upon his own life.

What can we walk away with from reading this novel? For me, it was a reminder that my voice is powerful. I have nothing to fear with Christ on my side. Making a difference in the lives of others has a way of impacting our own life.

This is another great read from Cara Putman. I am always excited to see she has a new release!

Happy Reading.

Hidden Among The Stars by Melanie Dobson

A time-slip novel. The present and the past connecting. I loved both. But what drew me in, what captured my heart was the stories of the past.

WWII in the year of 1938. These characters were so perfectly vivid my heart was moved in such a way I pondered their lives as if these characters were real. Max, Annika, and Luzia are characters that are unforgettable.

The present day characters were lovely. Sisters, a bookstore, a blog, and a passion for connecting people bring them to an adventure they never dreamed. Their love of books, of story, of the past, connects us with a time past, but not forgotten.

Something I learned was that the children's book, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer was about the Holocaust. That alone fascinated me and drew me to turn the pages, learning more. The way this book connects all of these characters is simply beautiful.

This is the first work I have read of Ms. Dobson. I am now intrigued to read more! This novel holds within its pages so much for the reader. History, romance, friendship, family, sacrifice, and so much more. An adventure for the heart, a mystery that kept me turning pages.

If you're searching for a great read to keep you cozy this is a gem you are certain to enjoy.

Happy Reading.

The Gift That I Can Give by Kathie Lee Gifford and illustrated by Julia Seal

Just beautiful! What a gem of a treasure. If you love gifting books, this should be on your giving list. It's just in time for Christmas. This is one you will read with your little ones over and over again.

The cover is just spectacular. Butterflies glittering and a little girl looking upward with such hope is the perfect cover for this wonderful read. I applaud the illustrator, Julia Seal. She has created such beauty and warmth, inviting colors and a sweetness that every little one will love.

This is a keeper because of the message that Gifford so beautifully gives. God, our Creator, is at the center of this message. These pages are wrapped in a message of love, worth, and service. A child is asking, "What is this gift to use as I grow? When will I see it? How will I know?" Such wisdom for little hearts to begin learning at a young age.

"God, will You show me this gift I can give as I grow and love and I learn how to live?"

This little one goes through many gifts that she knows she has been given. Through her story we see kindness, cheer, encouragement, grace, and mercy. Such sweet gifts that are from the heart, touching the lives of others. It isn't us being in the spotlight, but giving that to God and He allowing us, children, to be an extension of His love. Lessons for children and adults to learn together. A book that teaches that God created us to be, "One of a kind-I'm my very own ME! Exactly the person God made me to be!"

This book ends just a beautiful as it begins. "All God asks me as I grow, love, and live is that I show others the gift I can give. Then He'll help me find ways to give it away as He lives in my heart, every moment, every day. His love is the gift that I can give away."

I cannot wait to gift this treasure to my granddaughter. This will be one we can treasure together. Such simple life lessons, love-grace-mercy, His love, and may we give it away. It doesn't matter how big or small, each act, each word, coming from a heart of Christ, will share His love.

Although this book is juvenile, there too is another for little ones. So you are able to choose according to the age of the child you will gift this treasure to. My grandchildren are ages two to eight. I can see all of them loving this little gem.

How do you Say Good Night? by Tommy Nelson and illustrated by Catalina Echeverri

What an adorably cute book. I love the illustrations. Just perfect for young imaginations. Not only is it wonderful for bedtime, but anytime will do. Just snuggling up with this curious little zebra will be fun to explore.

Zoey is about to ready for bed and she is curious about how the other animals ready for bed. She asks the lions, warthogs, elephants, ostriches, monkeys, and the hippos, ending her adventure with telling her whole family good night.

"How do others say good night before they're tucked in tight? Do they stop to pray before they hit the hay? Do they brush their teeth before they go to sleep? What's the very best way to end each wonderful day?"

"Then Zoey asked a sounder of warthogs, "How do you say good night?" "We find a puddle and lie down to cuddle. We wiggle our snouts. We squeal and we shout. And we thank God above for His sweet, gentle love. Then we grunt and snort, 'Good Night!'"

I love how the Creator is the focus of this splendid gem. Each animal Zoey encounters shares how they say, 'Good Night', and all give praise to God. A great way for little ones to explore animals, to understand that we are all different, but most of all that there is one God, and we are to worship Him in our day and be thankful for all.

"Zoey walked up to a flock of ostriches and asked, "How do you say good night?" "We all get together and preen our long feathers. We eat something sweet-a big bedtime treat-And then we tell stories of God's wonderful glory. Then we squawk, 'Good Night!'"

Just in time for Christmas. It would make a great gift for your little ones. I think any age could enjoy this children's book. The writing is rhythmic, and the illustrations are cute and inviting. A great one to build imaginations and teach little ones to thank God for His care.

I have a few grands that are going to love this book!!

Finding Our Way Through The Aftermath

Two years later life has changed. It's been altered. Nothing is the same. On October 12, 2016 my husband was in a severe crash where he was hit at full speed from behind while he sat motionless. That red light in many ways saved his life. He's a professional driver. He carries US mail and was on his way home from work. He usually arrives home around 1:30 or so. But on this night he was running late, after arriving in St. Louis late after his run.
So why would that red light where he was stopped possibly save his life? When the light turned green, before he moved his foot from the brake to the gas, before he shifted gears, he looked behind him. He is always aware of his surroundings. This is something he has instilled in me. Seeing the driver, not breaking, not slowing, but swerving into his slow lane, gave him one second to hang on, to brace himself for the hit that would change his life.

After he was rushed to the ER, after many appointments with specialists, he was diagnosed with a concussion, a brain trauma. I have to admit I didn't know much about concussions before now. I think I could now write a book on the process. He now two years later still suffers from Post Concussive Syndrome. His brain endured three hits that night. The first was when he was hit from behind, then when he flipped end over end, third is when he landed upside down and crashing sideways.

When he finally came to a place where the truck was no longer moving, he smelled gasoline, felt the wetness on his legs and feet, (Later at the hospital they would have to remove his gasoline soaked clothes.), he realized he had to get out. The only way to escape was from kicking his way out of the side window.

I must share that this is frightening. I wasn't there side by side with my husband. Which he says he is forever grateful I wasn't in the truck with him. He's grateful our grandchildren were not present. Only him. I can only know the fear he endured and is still present today, by the words he has used to describe this crash. Those words haunt me. In the silence of my brain I can hear the roar and explosion of the crash. I can see him flipping end over end, the metal of truck bending and breaking. I'm not sure you can see clearly, but in the underneath of the truck there is nothing left.

He was hit so hard his radio flew out of the insert, his phone contained broken glass in the charger, his glasses were thrown, the bed-cover landed two hundred feet away, not all of the tools in the trunk were ever recovered. You can see from the photos he wasn't hit straight from behind. The car came into his lane and hit from the right side.
So how is he today? There are days where he feels like the crash just happened. He has memory issues, a fogginess, migraines, nerve pain, neck and spinal pain, mood swings, anxiety, he grows easily tired. Every day is something new. One pupil still remains enlarged, his ears haven't stopped ringing for one second. Two years of hearing constant cicadas, high and low. He too has lost a great deal of hearing. To hear my husband say to me, "Rob, I don't want to become useless.", breaks my heart. He has upcoming appointments with more specialists. We are praying for healing, for good news, to learn more and get him to a place where he can wake without pain. His hearing will never improve. The ringing? That isn't coming from his ears, but inside in brain. This happened from the severity of the crash.

Two years later and we are still waiting for the jury trial. It was scheduled for November 1-2. Dawn Woosley is charged with Assault 2nd Degree-Operate Vehicle While Intoxicated Resulting In Injury-Felony C, with a second charge of Assault-2nd Degree-also a C Felony. The jury trial was postponed  because her defence attorney is facing illness. On December 4 at 1:30 there will be another hearing to reschedule this trial.

On February 14, 2018 the judge revoked her drivers license for a one year period for refusing to admit the breathalyzer. This is seperate from the criminal trial. What are our hopes? She could receive a seven year sentence. We know, although this is not the first DWI she has been charged with in the past, will not happen. So as of right now she is the "accused". We are hoping to hear a guilty verdict. Now, being guilty of recklessly crashing into my husband isn't in question. Her being intoxicated is. She refused the breathalyzer. In this case I wish this crash would have happened in our county and not in the city limits of Byrnes Mill, Missouri. If so, a warrant would have been issued and a blood test would have been given. There is much that could be different in this case. But truth will prevail. My husband will testify to all he seen before and after the crash. I have been preparing for two years now to speak on his behalf in the victim's impact statement at her sentencing. This is empowering for us, the victims, because we will be able to speak the truth.

This woman who crashed into my husband, at the time was forty-six year old, a bar owner, and a nurse (Let that sink in for a moment). Why does that matter? A nurse is trained to run to give aid. She is trained to help when she sees someone in need. At the time of the crash she was seen by my husband slapping her leg in laughter with her friend and passenger. There was no running over and checking on my husband. Instead the passenger is seen with witnesses sharing cigarettes. All this while my husband is waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

How should things be? Let us just take out the idea that she could have been intoxicated. She crashed at full speed into my husband. That alone is a felony. Why wouldn't you help the person you just crashed into in the night? Why prolong this with a trial trying to say you are not guilty? A person with integrity and honor, wouldn't do such a thing. We raised our five children to hold themselves accountable for their actions. There is no accountability here. It angers me to hear her defense attorney try every avenue possible to try and gain her innocence.

We are living daily her choices of that day. We may be innocent victims of her poor choices, but we are certainly overcomers with Christ. He moves on behalf of His own and because of Him we have come so very far in this journey. He will continue to lead us, to surround us with godly support and prayer. This journey is far from over. A new court date will only prolong this, but in God's perfected time this portion of our journey will come to an end.

What are my hopes? That she will be found guilty. That my husband will find a place of healing. That our Lord will gain all victory and as our voices on drunk driving will grow. We have a voice and in that we can come together with others to bring about change in these matters. Our laws need to be obeyed and new laws need to be added to make it a first time offense DWI with prison time, not shock time, not a suspended sentence, and nothing of probation. As a bar owner, at the time, she has since lost her bar, should be held at a higher standard. But I say this reminding you that she is at this time, "only accused".

At the time of my husband's crash, this woman who caused his injuries, was a member of a local group my best friend had set up for her son, Donnie Tipton. It was called, "Justice for Donnie", and this group was set up because on September 12, 2014 Donnie at fifteen years of age was hit and killed by four drunk drivers while he waited at 7:10 in the morning for the school bus to pick him up. So, Dawn Woosley was a member of this group in search of justice for the drunk drivers who killed Donnie. That speaks volumes. Ironic isn't it? That two years later she would cause a severe crash and be charged with DWI.

The anger still comes. I weep for what my husband endures. Our lives are altered in so many ways. When that anger comes that is when I open my hands once again and hand it to Jesus. Trusting Him with everything that is behind us and in front of us. I can tell you that is a daily battle for me. As I care for my mother who is in the early stages of dementia, as we care for my husband's parents, and now as we will step up for his brother who is facing possible colon cancer. I am so thankful for our family and friends who support us with such encouragement and inspiration. In our walk it is our hope that we stand in truth and honor so that we can help others facing these same trials.

Friends, if you are facing a journey such as ours, don't give up. Walk in hope. Know there is a greater purpose in the trials we face. God is always at work in us and if we allow, that's the key, allowing, He will move and do wonders in our life in bringing us closer to Him. We may not be able to see the outcome, but He knows our yesterday, today, and tomorrow. There is no wavering in His love for us.

"Do you know? Have you not heard? Yahweh is the everlasting God, the Creator of the whole earth. He never grows faint or weary; there is no limit to His understanding. He gives strength to the weary and strengthens the powerless. Youths may faint and grow weary, and young men stumble and fall, but those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not faint."
Isaiah 40:28-31

The Cow Said NEIGH! A Farm Story by Rory Feek and Illustrated by Bruno Robert

Super cute and so fun! A new release by Rory Feek. You know him from Joey and Rory the country music couple. (click on the highlighted area and you can be directed to his website).

I have grands that are going to love this book! I love the soft padded feel of this board book. Rhyming. Who doesn't love it! A story of farm animals all intrigued with one another. The cow sees the horse and is inspired by his freedom to run, the horse sees a duck who swims all day, the duck is admiring the sheep's nice warm wool, the sheep is keen on the pig who digs all day, the pig is soon ruffing like the dog, the dog thinks it would be fun to be the cat who is chasing a mouse, the cat is partial to the farmer. The farmer hears the cat say, "Hello", and has to see the animals in the barn for himself. It's there he sees the unexpected and simply smiles at all before him.

The illustrations are beautifully done. Inviting and warm. A silly story that will bring a smile. I cannot wait to read this with my grands. Just in time for the coming holidays it would make a great gift for the little ones in your life.

There is lots here for the imagination. There's nothing here about faith. If you are searching for a children's book that holds Jesus as the center, this isn't that book. But in reading this fun and silly book it would be easy to talk about God, the animals He created and all the fun we can be thankful for because of His created treasures.

Enjoy! I think this is a great keeper.
