I went to a lot of concerts when I was a teenager. Yes, those loud rock concerts. We would stand in line for hours for tickets. We would stand the whole concert cheering and leave wanting more. There seemed to always be an encore. I mean think about it. You have large crowds. Cheering fans. Excitement in the air. Long lines and you are pumped to say the very least. You have told all your friends you are going. You have invited others to join. You even meet people while you are there. You sing along even when you don't know all the words. We have our lighters glowing brightly.
I think of The Beatles and how girls just screamed as they passed out from their excitement. I can remember Elvis Presley as a child and seeing groups of people flocking around him as he played and moved those hips about. There are many of those groups where kids just went crazy in anticipation. Today you have those groups also. I think there will always be screaming girls and those guys waiting in line for tickets. After the concert you stand in line again for a cd or a t-shirt. You wear it the next day and the day after that. You then go and share with all your friends who didn't happen to be there telling them just how awesome it was and what a great time they missed.
So, would we do that now, you know, if it were Jesus? Would we stand in line if we knew Jesus was coming to town? Would we invite all our friends? Would we see excitement in air? Could we feel energy all around us? Would we wear His t-shirt? Let's just pretend He was coming to town. Let's even say tickets were free to all those who wanted to come. If you came you even got a free t-shirt. How long would the line be? How many would be screaming in excitement?
See, that's the thing. Some of us are going to be there for the great concert while some of our friends and family are going to miss it. We have a chance right now to tell them He is coming. We have a chance now to share with them the lyrics to His songs of love. We are those t-shirts that others are seeing! We have a chance to hold up our light for others to see and join in, but are we?
This world is waiting for that next great "thing" to come along so they can jump on the band wagon. They are waiting for someone to share with them a concert set apart from all others. We have the opportunity to share a new song with them. The time is coming and we don't know how much time we have left. He could come today, tonight or tomorrow. Do we really want to leave our friends and family at home while we are celebrating with the real King?
John 3:16-17 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved."
